Before buying a BMX

Brakes

The brakes on a freestyle bike use a cable de-tangling headset that allows the handlebar tube to be rotated completely without becoming tangled in the front brake cable. Freestyle bikes use a u-brake so they have increased modulation. Generally jump bikes only have a rear brake.

Safety Considerations

Generally BMX bikes are manufactured come ready to ride when you buy them. There are a few safety measures you should consider if your bike wasn’t made ready to ride. There should be padding on the frame’s top tube, stem and handlebar crossbar. Getting pads is not expensive if your bike doesn’t already have them. Your BMX bike should not have a kickstand, chain guards, fenders and reflector brackets. So, if your bike has those things they need to be removed. Your bike should also have at least one working brake.

You can buy a standard BMX bike for around a hundred euro (two hundred dollars), but it will be heavier and may not have all the features you are looking for. The less expensive BMX bikes are perfect for a novice rider who is just learning the sport. Once you know what you are doing and have a firm grasp of what direction you are going in the sport you can better select a more activity specific bike.
