There are specific features one must look for when buying a BMX freestyle or jump bike. These bikes are built with a unique purpose in mind and knowing what you want and what you need is very important. The bike that you buy will need to fit the intended purpose and although there is a general BMX bike category the bikes in that category differ in several areas. There are basic guidelines that can be used to determine what bike you should buy once you have determined what whether you are using the bike for freestyle riding or racing.

Frame

If you want to do freestyle and dirt jumping it is important that you have a sturdy frame over a lightweight frame. A sturdy frame construction is important because the bike is placed under a lot of stress during these activities. Generally freestyle bikes weigh almost two times as much as other BMX bikes. Usually, jump bikes are sturdier than other BMX bikes, but they are lighter than most freestyle bikes. It is also important to make sure the frame size fits the rider.

Wheels and Tires

Generally a BMX bike has a 20-inch wheel diameter. Other variations in wheels of a jump bike would include, sturdy 13-gauge spokes. Riders that are larger need to use a 24-inch wheel. The knobby tires on BMX bikes are designed to increase the traction of the bike. Jump bikes have the most heavily treaded tires. Freestyle BMX bikes use a 48-spoke wheel because they are sturdier than the wheels used in BMX racing. Additionally, freestyle tires are wider and have a smoother tread suitable for use on pavement or indoor use. Freestyle bikes also have axle pegs that are used for tricks and stunts.

Handlebars

The handlebars used on either a freestyle bike or jump bikes should rise steeper to create agility when you are doing tricks and jumps.
