BMX Bikes today
When BMX initially began riders did not use BMX bikes. At the time BMX bikes simply did not exist and riders modified the bikes that were currently being sold to fit their needs. BMX bikes started being built in the early 1980s and initially the main difference between a BMX bike and a street bike was that BMX bikes had a 20 inch wheel. BMX is a relatively new sport and the evolution of the bikes that riders use is still actively taking place.
The original BMX bikes were made more for strength and durability and did not focus on the need riders had for lighter weight bikes. For many riders the ideal BMX bike would be light, strong and agile without being overly complicated. Newer technologies have led to manufacturers being able to create stronger parts that are still light weight. Some of the newer technologies seen on BMX bikes would include:
Newer braking systems used on BMX bikes use bearings that press directly into the frame of the bike. These braking systems are the same basic design that was used on street bikes years ago and they are lighter weight and easier to use.
Street bikes always used integrated or internal headsets and now they are commonly seen on BMX bikes as well. Many manufacturers have replaced the press and fit cups that were used previously with the integrated or internal headsets.
Kevlar beaded tires are now used by many manufacturers of BMX bikes. The primary function of Kevlar tires is that they reduce weight and they are much stronger than standard bike tires. Some companies use a thin Kevlar tire that is even lighter than a standard Kevlar tire, but these tires are very expensive.
