BMX events
Flatland
The flatland event is performed on a smooth, flat surface with no rugged or uneven terrain. The riders in this event perform tricks that demonstrate balance and spinning, using the bike and body to hold different positions. The bikes used in flatland usually have a smaller wheel base than other freestyle bikes and they are heavier. They also have four pegs made of aluminum, so that riders can stand on them to perform tricks.
Racing
BMX racing is a form of bike racing that takes place in an off road environment. It was derived from motocross and was the first BMX event. During a BMX race eight riders line up at a starting gate and race around the dirt track that usually consists of variously sized jumps until one rider reaches the finish line. The bikes used for BMX racing are usually strong, agile and lightweight.
These events can be seen during extreme sport’s competitions like the X games, the Gravity games and the Dew Tour. The riders of BMX bikes often compete in multiple events and travel with the tours competing several months each year. In fact, the Dew Tour is like an event series with riders racking up points in each event to have an overall finishing average at the end of the tour.
