Although BMX racing is an individual sport many riders organize into teams. These teams of riders are usually organized for business exposure. Companies will sponsor these races, riders or teams for the purpose of advertising.

To make BMX racing more exciting the tracks are made with dirt heaps of varying sizes. The dirt courses have jumps to make the race more of a challenge to the riders. The tracks are banked and have flat corners, which also increase the difficulty level.

The bikes used in BMX racing are strong, agile, lightweight and have a standard 20-inch-wheel. A variation of the standard BMX bike would include, a larger 24-inch-wheel. The BMX bikes with 24 inch-wheels are called cruisers. Cruisers are generally made for adult riders that are to large for the standard 20-inch-wheel bikes.

BMX bikes sports are fairly new and they are constantly evolving in both technologies and events. BMX racing is now an Olympic sport and will make its Olympic debut during the 2008 summer games. The event will be sanctioned by the UCI and several different BMX racing events will be part of the games. BMX riders will now have the opportunity to receive Olympic gold. The Olympic BMX races will be eight riders in a 350 meter races through jumps on a banked dirt track.
