The history of BMX Bikes
In the early 1980s the sport began to etch its way into popular culture and the popularity of BMX was growing at a rapid pace. Riders were not just looking to race their bikes anymore, they were constantly testing the limits with tricks. Many riders began to mimic the tricks done on skateboards on their bikes and eventually this led to the development of freestyle BMX riding.
By the early 1990s the world of BMX had become extreme and all over the world riders were testing the limits of their bikes and themselves in the pursuit of new tricks. It was around this time that the world of extreme sports was beginning to develop recognition and ESPN saw the potential for a large following. ESPN hosted the first X Games in 1995 in Rhode Island and BMX was introduced to the mainstream.
The X Games provided BMX riders an Olympic like competition and exposure that they could have never imagined. Riders began seeing the opportunity to create a legitimate career for themselves as a BMX rider and television deals and endorsements followed. Kids all over the country had the new aspiration to become like the riders they saw on the X Games and travel the world competing in BMX sports.
Many new competitions followed the X Games and riders have more opportunities every year to compete on the pro BMX circuit. Professional BMX riders are now actual professional athletes and many have salaries and notoriety comparable to an NFL star.
